Organized for the last 22 years, the club has been actively participating in the Southern California community activities. Our known prowess in basketball was proven here when we twice bagged the Division II, Los Angeles Filipino-American Basketball Tournament Title, with the 1997 crown as its most recent. The Balanghai Newsletter circulated semi-annually had become the most convenient source of capsulated information, updates & activities of the Butuanons, not only here in the United States, but also in our home city.
These were all the fruits of all hard labours of sincere & dedicated Butuanons who altogether build upon the foundation carefully laid down by their founding elders. With the strong leadership of Mr. Gabby Ortiz, we have tried to maintain and reinforce the ties that bind all of the Butuanons.
This site was conceptualized inorder to recognize the efforts of a trully valued leader, as well as the duly supportive Butuanons. These inspired the brilliant minds of three Butuanons from the San Fernando Valley, California in the person of Jun Lopez, Miller Arranguez & Anthony Labajo, to develop this page.
To Gabby, you really have inspired us. We hope that your successors will equal, if not, even surpass your innovative leadership.
History
Gi-unu kay namo pagsugod.
It all started one afternoon,
22 years ago, at 1027 North Edge-mont St.
Los Angeles
where Butuanons,
full of dreams
and idealism,
yet confronted with the daunting challenge of
forming an association that would withstand time
and overcome the
pitfalls that ruined many hometown organizations,
decided to organize themselves.
Ben Fortun,
responsible for initiating the meeting,
was unanimously elected the first president,
while Mario Sibayan, Dorcas Lasam, Nards Buranday, Moren Trillo, Totoy Balanon,
Mely Trillo, Nonong Villanueva, Walter Abrantes and a number of others filled-up the rest of the pioneer positions. On the same day,
they were able to define
as anybody who has a consequence with
Butuan through
heritage, tradition,
and experience; anyone who has had a relationship with
Butuan by birth,
by blood,
by association or
by emotion.
In time, new names were added to the rooster of officers like Nars Jandug, Pris Osin Harper, Totoy Flores,
Tinoy Santos, Jessie Sioson,
Nonoy Lopez & Gabby Ortiz, bringing in greater
vigor and strength to the club.
Thrust and Direction
As an aggrupation of friends, of acquaintances in a voluntary nature giving their whole self and commitment to whatever cause they may want to undertaken
the Butuan Club of Southern California
aims to bring forth an association that would trully serve a community of Butuanons away from home.
Likewise, the club hopes to
initiate
the federation
of different
Filipino-American
Organizations
or communities
from Caraga Region
to coordinate
the efforts for
the best
of interest
for the region back home.
A council of officers
comprising different
association of
Caraga Region will be formed.
This will be
hopefully
undertaken this
year.
